KILLOLOGY, (n): The scholarly study of the destructive act, just as sexology is the scholarly study of the procreative act. In particular, killology focuses on the reactions of healthy people in killing circumstances (such as police and military in combat) and the factors that enable and restrain killing in these situations.

The original, unedited excerpt from Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's book, On Combat. After being passed from email to email, published in numerous media outlets, and quoted (with permission) in the movie adaptation of American Sniper, the now-classic essay has become the credo to those who devote themselves to protecting our precious sheep.

Alternately, this essay is an invaluable tool to help explain a disposition so hard to communicate to our loved ones and community: Why do we serve?

Check out the essay here.

Adapted from his book, On Killing, this entry was orginally published in the Encyclopedia of Violence, Peace, and Conflict. Now published on this website in its entirety, "The Psychological Effects of Combat" is a scholarly primer on the foundation of killology. From psychiatric casualties to the physiology of close combat, read the perspective that started it all.

Secrets of Mental Marksmanship: How to Fire Perfect Shots

by Linda K. Miller and Keith A. Cunningham, with a foreword by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman

There is one thing that all marksmen-whether they're soldiers, cops, hunters, or competitive shooters-agree on: only hits count. Depending on your role, it may be more important to be faster or it may be more important to be precise, but in the end it's the shooter who can achieve perfect shots on demand, all the time, who wins. To fire a perfect shot, you need to bring together a mix of very specific conditions into that single moment when the trigger breaks. Some of the required conditions are technical, some of them are physical, but the requirements that are most important-and most elusive-are the mental skills.

The Sheepdog Seminar is a three-man tag team presentation currently touring America.

Jimmy Meeks, Carl Chinn, and Lt. Col. Dave Grossman give a whirlwind exhibition covering lessons learned from tragedies in churches, schools, and everywhere in between, emphasizing what an individual can do to maintain everyone's safety.

This is one of the few presentations by Lt. Col. Grossman open to the public. Designed for a diverse audience from all walks of life, he covers the now-classic metaphor relating sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs to our everyday life, as well as sharing his research on violence and terrorism.

This started as an event for churches, but it has grown into so much more. Attend a presentation near you and see why it's sweeping the nation:
